Title: September 2021
Post by: Jimbo on September 18, 2021, 07:55:05 PM
Great news: the beach is still here, and the beer is still cold.

Excellent friendly service at Doncaster Sheffield, including security. Cheerful staff in Wetherspoons. Beautiful sunrise over the runway, and flight on time. Alas it was cloudy all the way, so no great views of the Alps. Masks worn on plane, which was ten minutes early.

Very easy at immigration. He didn't even pick up and examine the PLF and certificates - just stamped the passports. Must say he looked pretty bored, and who can blame him?

Unfortunately, our taxi didn't show up, but the TUI staff at the airport were excellent, and got us on the next bus. On the bus were two San Stef regulars who had a nightmare at Manchester - still in security after two hours and had to run to the gate. No hot drinks on the plane, so they had to have Bacardi and toast for breakfast.

But we had a front row seat in the mostly empty bus, which didn't stop until we reached the village. Great welcome at Nafsika. Anso we began the usual adventure of trying to fit something in between eating.

Cloudy this morning with a southerly breeze - but the sun did come out, and we had a pleasant relax on the beach by Mistral.

It's quiet in the old village. Peace - just the sound of the small waves breaking. Bliss.

Wish some of you were here!

Jim

Today was forecast for some rain. It did - for all of one minute!

There's a real sense of happiness amongst the holidaymakers. We've met several again in Mistral at lunch-time who, like us, haven't been here for two years. Everything is well-organised. The Covid measures are minimal and non-intrusive. The lights are still on in paradise.

Still coming down from the pre-departure "have I really got all the paperwork" stress. Takes a few days. At least the new entry regulations will remove one potential hurdle on the way home.

Wish you were here, Karen and John. Carl - it may rain on Monday and Tuesday but don't worry. Let's face it, the beach etc is only what you do here to fill in the gap between meals.

Yammas, everybody.

Enjoy Jimbo, we just missed you and left on the 16th.

Nafsika was magical as always albeit a bit quiet. Spiros was on top form and he has a fantastic team behind him this year ... was especially impressed with Vasselis the barman and hope he’s back next year.

We stayed in Vagelis’s apartments as usual but took his winter home for a change which is right above the old supermarket overlooking the Nafsika pool, 1st time we’ve used this villa and have booked it for next year.

Weather perfect, a few cloudy days and temperatures not oppressive like July and August, a bit cool in the evenings.

Food delicious and welcome from everyone overwhelming, the locals were genuinely pleased to see us.

The transfer to the resort and return trip home wasn’t as stressful as we expected, mainly thanks to my other half making sure our paperwork was in place,  everything went smoothly at both Corfu and Edinburgh airports.

Roll on next year .... 8)

Lesley's looking great, folks! So lovely to catch up a bit. And we finally met Maggiesaes after all this time. Wonderful.

I've given my awful cold to Gillie. She is not pleased. So we did nothing at all today. The clouds in the early morning scudded away as the breeze turned to a north easterly.  The sun is still winning, and the skies have been blue. Ice-cream and milk-shakes for lunch in the rather smart little coffee bar next to Peli and Maria's shop.

It's the hour before sunset as I sit in the Nafsika bar writing this. Cooking smells are drifting across the village - you know, that aroma of barbecuing meat and oregano that tells you that you are in Greece.

It's peaceful, relaxed, and as lovely as ever. Book now for next year, folks! But leave room for us :-)

Cheers, BAJ.

Windy today. Mostly blue sky but the maistro is whipping in from the NNW. Lots of kite-surfers on the bay.

Didn't do much. Reading by the pool, finding as much shelter as possible. I don't like wind - it makes me restless. Looks like tomorrow will be even windier.  Oh well!

Spotted, I believe, Jimbo and Gill strolling around the Nafsika pool just after 11.00 (Greek time) today.  Perhaps the best place with what appeared to be a strong breeze off the sea.  Three hours on and time for a spot of lunch in  ........  Waves, Mistral or Manthos perhaps?  Nice weather here but.....!

Very windy here but clear blue sky once more.

Lovely to meet Jimbo and Gillie at last and now we have hired a buggy we can reach some parts we have neglected of late.
Beware soon to be octogenarians nipping through AS  ;D
Two weeks of our three almost over but plenty left to enjoy.

That little cafe is a delight Jim.We were sitting there yesterday while the grapes were being gathered above and were each given a beautiful bunch of grapes to sample.
Happy days indeed.

Wind dropped quite a lot overnight, but not enough to sit on the beach. Mind you, I am a bit of wimp with chill breezes. But good for a walk up to the Tsaros bar, which is perfect shelter from a NW wind. Great to see Thanassis and Kristina. Wow, the kids have grown!

This afternoon the wind returned. With luck, for its final serious event for a few days. Roast sucking pig on the spit tonight. That'll warm me up. I hope.

The general air of cheerfulness is still all around. The village has probably done enough to survive. It's been a tough two years for all of us.

For many years we went Jul/Aug i.e. first 2-3 weeks of the school holidays and I still recall having to wedge the kids air-bed between sun beds in the Nafsika for them to hide behind and shelter from that wind….

I've been feeling ill and yesterday retired to bed. That caused panic in the hotel, so had to go to get a test today. Negative. Phew! I saw the doctor; I have a chest infection, and now have antibiotics and steroids.

Post by: Jimbo on September 28, 2021, 08:09:28 PM
I'm mending quite well, thanks. I've got antibiotics, steroids and an inhaler. Must be doing something!

Weird day today. Cloudy in the morning and cool but rapidly warming up to a very clammy day. Cooled again around four.

I'm still banned from swimming by doctor, so we walked along the beach. The beach is the widest that I've know it in twelve years. Our end (Waves etc) still has plenty of people, but up on the expanse towards Mango etc there were hundreds of beds with maybe 20 people. It looked a bit sad.

Mistral's still doing incredibly well - full tables every lunchtime, and plenty of meantime drinkers.

We finally had some spits of rain this afternoon. Like every other day, the morning was bright and sunny and beautiful. We spent it by the lovely blue Nafsika pool. The reason for the green was a couple of weeks ago somebody put too much chlorine in; this changes the Ph of the water and causes mineral oxidation. It's been rather expensively fixed by Spiros, even though he only has four rooms occupied from now on. Thanks, Spiros!

Lots of people left today, right across the village. It's going to be a quiet week. Maybe some rain showers. The air is noticeably cooler this evening, but the clouds are clearing a bit over the islands.

The nurse at the clinic gave me the all-clear this morning, and said I can eat, drink, swim, do what I like. I'm much better than I was when I arrived, that's for sure. We've had some great food at Nafsika, Mistral, and today at Manthos for lunch.

Yammas, everybody!

Monday evening: It's been a beautiful day - clear sun and a light breeze, although the air temperature is noticeably cooler, and now, after sunset, it's definitely time for trousers and a fleece. Plenty of people at Mistral at lunchtime.

Zorbas has closed, and Beachcombers' last night is tomorrow. So, autumn is here The sunbeds are thinning out. Beside Mango the beds have gone, but the brollies are still there on their heavy bases - they look like big strange plants.

The sea remains flat calm, with hardly a ripple, and the beach is vast; there are three rows of sunbeds outside Mistral, and it's a significant stroll from there to the sea. The stream is a trickle. There's no bridge, but two long parallel squared-off logs. I tried it a few days ago  - it gets very bouncy in the middle, and there's a good risk of falling into the stagnant water.

Yes  - it's a windy day with light rain and sunny spells. Bit of a sea running.

It's very quiet everywhere. Almost all the sunbeds have gone from the "main" beach - leaving Waves, Mistral and Manthos as the last bastion for what few sunbathers may be left.

Indoor eating today. Airport tomorrow - with a wall-to-wall forecast of thunder and rain, so hoping the plane gets in and out.

Signing off until we get back.  J.

Full report over the weekend.

Thunder, lightning and rain all night. Seemed unlikely we'd actually get off, because there were diversions on Thursday. The bus picked us up from Nafsika at 8:20. Our flight was 13:20.

On the bus, at the airport and on the plane it was obvious that about 35% of our countrymen have no idea what a mask is, what it's for, what they breathe through, that it's not a talisman you wear around your chin.

Arrived at the airport in pouring rain with circling lightning. The airport was, frankly, a nightmare. It took one and a half hours of queuing round endless crocodile alleys to get to the check-in desk. There were at least a thousand people crammed into the two check-in areas. Social distancing - forget it!

Security was quick, uncrowded and well-organised. Through in five minutes. The new departure lounge is very nice. I just had time to cram half a Burger King thing down before our gate opened.  Then the next stupidity. What the don't tell you is that passport control is between the lounge and the gates. Another long queue - more crocodile lanes. Take note - there are eateries in the gate area. If you had the correct, well-organised documents, at all stages the formalities were easy.

Our plane, like many others, was on an hour's delay, because they had to circle to avoid storms before landing.

Next to me was a woman who would have dwarfed Mount Olympus. We'd picked her and her equally gross husband up from an all-inclusive on our bus. At no point did her mask actually cover either her mouth or her nose. No crew member mentioned it, although they made several PA announcements about masks.

Arrived in a sunny Doncaster with a temperature of 22 - which was a lot warmer than Corfu. Short walk (30 yards?) to the Meet and Greet, where our car was waiting. Alas, roadworks caused a diversion, but we miraculously were able to park outside our house, despite the fact that Hull Fair opened tonight. Door to door 12 hours.

The airport seriously need to be re-organised, at least for Fridays. A nightmare, basically.

Hi Jimbo, a good summary of the trip back. Only addition from me is the long and late transfer to airport with TUI. Must remember to book taxi next year. Fortunately I didn’t have the large lady sat next to me.
Title: Re: September 2021
Post by: Jimbo on October 09, 2021, 04:26:49 PM
The problem is too many planes in too short a period. That's TUI's fault for flying the majority of its UK flights on a Friday morning.

Usually we check the bags and then sit outside at the coffee bar until it's time to go through. No chance yesterday.

Many will violently disagree, but I reckon that it takes longer to get checked-in when people have to hunt and peck around on their bloody mobile phones to find the documents. I've been programming computers for 40 years, and I, and all other programmers, know that if it's going to go wrong it will do it at the worst possible moment. Get it printed. In a nice transparent cover. Easy for everybody. And don't give me any crap about saving the planet. Printer paper, like newspaper, is a renewable resource and carbon neutral. The electricity used to charge all those mobiles is almost certainly produced by burning fossil fuels. And now the useless docs will go into the recycling bin, and be turned into bog-rolls.

I don’t want to give any false impressions, so let me say that almost all of this is for reasons not at all connected with the village or its people.

It was in many ways the most disastrous holiday we’ve ever had. What overshadowed it was illness. I was feeling ill before we went – so much so that I did two LFTs. A bad flu-like cold. I suspect I caught it from my ex-wife who had had something very similar the week before. I took her to pick up her new second-hand car. I assumed I’d feel better with some sun and relaxation.
The trip out was great. Easy drive to Doncaster-Sheffield airport at three in the morning. “Meet and Greet” parking was excellent – right next to the terminal, park, sign in and drop your keys – all very friendly even at four am. Fast check-in. Pleasant people in security. Pleasant people in the departure lounge, which is also the gate area. Light breakfast in the equally cheerful Wetherspoon’s eatery.

I went downstairs to the outside smoking area for a ciggie and watched a pink Wizzair jet take off in the first light of morning. Then back in the departure area the long line of windows facing the runway lit up with a wonderful red dawn. A very nice waitress told me that was a bonus of the early shift – they have fantastic dawns.

The flight was on time. Boarding was efficient. Good crew. Good, but cloudy flight, so no views even down the Croatian coast. Easy transit through arrivals, got bags. The taxi driver got his dates wrong, but TUI put us on the next bus, which went straight to Agios Stefanos. Took about an hour to Nafsika, where we had lunch and a glass of vino.
Our friends Catherine and Paul Barnes were staying at Christina’s, near the church, and we had many enjoyable meals and drinks with them. Although I was quite ill, and got progressively worse, the best part of this trip was actually socialising. We’d been hiding in a Covid cave for eighteen months, and it was such a pleasure talking to so many people – lots of friends we’d met on previous trips, plus all the locals.

The weather was beautiful. Apart from one windy day the sea was placid and the beach wide. I went in the sea only once, I’m sad to say. We never did get our ring blown up to bob about on. Gillie caught the bug from me, so she was in decline. After nine days I felt so bad I retired to bed. The next day, my birthday, I went to the clinic. The lovely nurse Dora gave me a lateral flow test and called the doctor, who confirmed my diagnosis of bronchitis. I was given drugs, and the next day they brought the full suite of pills and inhalers, and banned me from swimming, the sun, and alcohol. I interpreted the latter as excessive alcohol. Total cost was 167 euros.

Life in the village was relaxed and as lovely as always. Great dancing at Zorba’s and lovely lunches at Mistral. Everybody was so kind. Prices pretty much unchanged after two years. The main thing is, after the isolation and tension of the pandemic in the UK, the sheer ease of an outdoor life was such a massive relief.

The owners were quite bitter about the way they’d been messed around by TUI. Constant cancellations, and then booking two people into a place that needed five staff to run. But the taverna owners had one of their busiest Augusts for many years.

Above all, it felt safe, and right, and lovely. I just wish we’d been able to enjoy it more. With hindsight it might have been better for us to postpone, but we didn’t know things would develop as they did.

Please don’t hesitate to book for next year. There is nothing to fear and everything to enjoy. The warmth and filoxenia is just the same. The people are the same. The sea is kind and beautiful.

But try not to be ill – that’s better done at home!

A shame you were both ill Jimbo and that it made the holiday not quite what it would normally be. But they all go to make the “great” holidays I’m sure we all remember, and it makes them all the “greater”!

Thanks, guys! In the "olden days" I would have seen a doctor before we went, and would have been told not to fly, take the antibiotics and go to bed! It's probably easier now to get an audience with the Pope than see a GP. If it happens like this again I will insist, or go to A&E.

Saddened to read of your ill health whilst on holiday Jim, nothing worse, I always just want to go home if I'm poorly, fingers crossed you both recover very soon, thanks for the reports too.

Hey Jimbo
We got caught in the Burger King before passport control last year, total panic stations, we’ll never make that mistake again we said !!
Guess what ?? We did it again this year  ;D ;D ;D

Sadly attending A&E is the only way to be seen nowadays. I've given up trying to get past the surgeries kommandant on reception

It's a bit odd as a number of people has said this, but we have had no such problem. If anything with telephone appointments and physical appointments things have been easier. I think ours must be an exception.

We are very lucky with our GP. We have a system called My GP, which is like an email system. John had a chest infection and other issues, last week. The GP phoned back at 7pm and said to collect some antibiotics from Tesco pharmacy, which she had prescribed and to go for a face to face with her, 3 days later. We spent half an hour with her.

Gillie caught the infection from me, and has been ill. She went for a scheduled blood test on Monday, and the nurse booked her in to see a GP two hours later. Now she has antibiotics. So it can happen.

Had our booster jabs yesterday, and received our Day 2 PCR negative test results - so that concludes the 2021 holiday saga.

I did manage to write about a third of a radio play whilst in AS - so now trying to get the energy to complete it. Still feeling tired, despite a lot of sleep. Still, I did unblock the kitchen sink and Gillie says I'm on 100% good boy at the moment. Very rare, and I fear will not last long!

I'm still tired most of the time, despite sleeping a lot.

Still - I was pleased I insisted on printing all the travel paperwork; it seems some people couldn't fly because the vaccination status system was off-line for several hours. Complex systems have many points of failure; paper doesn't.

My brother-in-law was meant to be flying back from Turkey when that storm was doing its thing but luckily his flight was cancelled. He was delayed 36 hours which is some storm.

Heavy rain overnight Friday which lasted all day yesterday, Saturday.  This Sunday morning it is a grey day with some light rain/drizzle. The forecast does indicate more rain later.  Up here in Avliotes, we are fine, no flooding, however yet again the Central and South areas of the island have been flooded.  TV showing roads closed and high rain levels on the streets.  It is also unusually mild 21c this morning.  Wishing everyone a lovely Sunday x

No chance of a BBQ here in south Wales. We've just had hailstones. Nice.
