Title: Mozzies now
Post by: debra on July 20, 2013, 05:07:45 PM
Hi everyone

Can anyone tell me if the ferocious mozzies are still as bad?  Getting ready to go.  21 of us in our party descending on Ag Stef for oru sons wedding plus about 20 others.  Really, really looking forward to it.

Thank you!

Seems to depend where you are. I have zero bites, Gillie has three - probably because we ventured from the old village into the new last night.

Here is a link to a news article about the large number of mozzies

http://greece.greekreporter.com/2013/07/16/swarms-of-mosquitos-invade-greece/

Hope they dwindle by the time we go

They were shocking this year, especially our first week.
I very rarely get bit bar one year in Egypt when they got me about 20 times on one foot!!

Worse night was when we ate at Nafsica. You could see and hear them buzzing you. Got about 3 bites sat there that night!

Daughter currently has well over 20 in last 6 days, using plug ins and various anti mossie stuff doesn't seem to be doing much  :(. She must have fantastic tasting blood!

Yes, I find the Nafsica worst for mozzies too.
Got a few in June, but not too bad, hope we escape them in August.

When we last visited San Stef in 2010 we got bitten loads of times and we used autan spray, citronella from the village and we always kept our liquid mosiquito plug in on.

Normally any bites in the Med or canaries are v few and far between - some hols zero bites.

Without doubt San Stef was, and still is, worst place we've been for mossie bites in last 20 years. Anyone know why the blighters seem so resistant to spray, etc in San Stef?

We always use medium strength jungle formula, and plenty of it. So far we've come away relatively unscathed.
Hope it will be the same this year - we will find out starting tomorrow ;D ;D

It's been said many times on the forum over several weeks now, try Incognito from Amazon, (£7 for 100ml post free) worked well for me, 17 nights and only one bite

Thanks Diane.
Leave for airport 1.00 am. Whole family already clock watching. Fear it is going to be a long afternoon/evening.

Never ever been bitten at Nafsika. Spent six weeks there last year - no bites. Been there three times this week with no spray on. No bites.

My experience of Agios Stefanos is that is one of the lowest mozzie-infected places I've been to in Greece.

I always get bit wherever I go and I take all the percautions!!

Already taking garlic tablets and have been for a week or so!!
Never take any perfume on holiday these days!
Use plug ins.
Have air con on full blast!
Used lots of different mozzie stuff.
Have used the Avon stuff but cant seem to get the right one nowadays!

And still I get bit!!!  So I am dreading this part of the holiday!!!

Forgot to say we also keep the aircon on as they don't seem to like the cold in your rooms. I don't take perfume and Roy doesn't use after shave either whilst we are there and we both don't wear shorts at night. :)

The balcony is usually a hotspot for bites!!! Deffo got a couple of mine sat out late on a night after getting back. Despite having the Citronella candle going!!
All we've used anywhere in previous years is the aftersun with repellant in and plug ins

Based on info here, I've ordered the whole mosquito repellent kaboodle from Amazon - the lifesystems stuff which is what you use were you to venture into the Amazon............should sort the Greek mozzies out no probs!!  ;D

Hi
I noticed a advert somewhere for mozzie repellent wrist bands.  Has anyone used or had any success with them?
Cheers
Title: Re: Mozzies now
Post by: Jimbo on July 31, 2013, 10:24:49 AM
I used no repellent at all and did not bitten once in two weeks. In fact, I didn't see a mozzie. So I'm a bit sceptical about these doom-laden reports of squadrons of mosquitoes bombing the place!
Title: Re: Mozzies now
Post by: Rover on July 31, 2013, 11:17:34 AM
We wear the wrist bands, and also use Autan. We have not been bitten. This could be due to any number of other reasons! Eg visit date etc. I still believe that some of the lower leg stings/bites are not always from mosquitos. Also always carry antihistamine tablets to help reduce swelling. We avoid antihistamine cream.

We use garlic tablets and 100% deet spray without it the wife gets nailed, but with it all clear  :)

You're right Rover it's not always the mosquitoes that bite your legs, there are some pesky little flies that like to have a chew at you as well
and they are about day and night.I don't know if any sort of repellent works on them.

I heard from others eat Marmite not sure!!!! but everyone has their own ideas, me I use a plug in a night and put the a/c on when asleep.......

Post by: Gavlah1973 on July 31, 2013, 07:35:50 PM
Jimbo..... they were definitely there. You've been one of the lucky ones. I normally am but this year I got eaten by them.....

Like I say worst parts of the village were the night we spent at Nafsica, buzzing and bombing us like mad and on the balcony back at the apartments. I also had a couple of em after me in the bedroom despite using the plug in.
The little man never got bitten at all...... weird!

There was one night whilst we were there when it was a bit cool and windy. Glenn at Aquarious said everyone moved inside..... unfortunately so did the Mozzies resulting in quite a few bites for everyone that evening!

I usually get around 7 or 8 over a fortnight, but funnily enough this year was the best I've ever had! :D Only three and I think a couple weren't mozzies but some other type of biter as they didn't really come up much. Used the new stuff people have mentioned from Amazon and did put it on every night but never in the daytime. We were staying at Anatoli and eating a lot at Nafsika and had no bites there. Seems to be just a lot of luck, or bad luck should I say - take no notice of Jim as it's true he never seems to get bitten and hardly ever puts any anti-mozzzie stuff on as he hates the smell!!! They just don't like him!   He does wear long trousers and socks most evenings and I'm sure that helps. However I have to say we didn't see many while we were there. So if they like you keep spraying - good luck!

Gillie

The situation has probably changed again.
We've been back 4 weeks now and it was bad then.
Im putting it down to the strange weather as were a lot of thd locals.
Hot April, cool May and very breezy June.
There weren't many folk we spoke to whilst there that hadn't had a few chomps more than they usually get. Not all of them but the majority.
Weather is probably more normal now so may have settled down

Day 7 for us and no bites on any of the four of us.
Follow strict routine with the repellant though and have seen people walking round with plenty of bites. I think some people are more susceptible than others. Previous years we have been bitten the odd time despite using repellant.

Came back yesterday after another excellent stay at the Nafsika.
Mozzies not bad too bad there as long as you were careful to apply plenty of repellent in the evening. Only about 10 bites between the 6 of us in the 2 weeks we were there.
There were several people there who had not been applying and were covered in bites, one poor soul had 25 bites in one evening after going to the Greek dancing night at Summer Dreams.
I think the plenty of deet or similar has to be the order of the day - better to be safe than sorry as the little blighters can certainly ruin your holiday.

home last saturday,,about 20 between the four of us , big party all reporting not many . brother had none in 2 weeks . think ours were due to a night in the apartment (spiradoula) eating . majority were then (8) but that's it . not knockin the apartment ,its beautiful . prob our negligence relaxing without applying the repellent ... use baby oil with aloe vera and nothing gets near ya !! happy holidays

Hi gill. Couldn't get over the size of the toads out side our door little grandchildren loved to look for them evenings.

Three of us for two weeks and no bites for the first time ever.

Used the plugins 24/7 and the mighty Autan which was recommended to us by the owner of the Margarita's supermarket last year. We normally use the plugins, Jungle Formula and other anti-mozzie stuff but to no affect but this year it was great.  :)

A lot of it is to do with your blood type apparantly. The rarer your blood the less likely you are to get bit.
Jimbo is that correct.

Apparantly they prefer Blood type O to A. Also if you are overweight you are likely to get bit more as you will be more out of breath when walking etc and they Carbon Dioxide. I also read they love dark blue and black clothing!!

I'll try to find this article online!

http://www.webmd.com/allergies/features/are-you-mosquito-magnet (http://www.webmd.com/allergies/features/are-you-mosquito-magnet)

There are others. There does seem to be some genetic disposition towards being bitten.

Being over-weight, drinking Marston's and breathing out a lot obviously don't help, either.

Thanks Gill C, it was lovely to meet you and the family also. Hope the children quickly recovered and that you managed to enjoy the unexpected extra days in the end. On the topic of mozzies, I thought I'd got away without any bites (for the first time ever!) and then the little blighters found me on my last night - several times! Extra repellent needed for Sept.

Bad news for Mythos drinkers!!! According to The Mail today mosquitoes are more attracted to beer drinkers!!
Not only that they also prefer people with group O blood and sweaty feet. So,as a non beer drinking, group A blood type with permanently
cool feet I know now why I rarely get bitten, hooray!!

Well I don't know how true this is - but I still haven't had one Mossie bite in 30 years of San Stef, while others around me had been a mozzies lunch.
I do have a less common bloodgroup and I take anti-histamines - but I do like a beer - so how do you explain it?
The annoying thing is that I walk the dogs in my local park - - - I walk through clouds of Gnats at certain times and pick up occasional Gnat bites
- so whatever the Mozzies don't like - the Gnats do!!

I guess you must be one of the lucky ones that mosquitoes ignore,or it could be that after 30 years they've got so used to you they treat you like an old friend.

No - they still buzz around me but never feed off me - - not sure why - - same in every country - - I felt sure they would bite in India etc - but no!!

For the room we just leave the Jungle Formula plug ins 24 / 7 and then the air con helps as well. Don't normally get bit these days.
Citronella candles should help as well whilst you are in your room.
