Title: Romanza........maybe one for Yannis!!
Post by: Gavlah1973 on February 28, 2010, 07:35:53 PM
Yannis

Just remembered (dont tell the wife) that's it's our wedding anniversary just over a week into our stay (29th August if anyone wants to pay me on a beer!!!)

Do all the rooms have a sea view or is it worth emailing the hotel direct to see if they could maybe put us in one of the slightly better one.

Cheers in advance

Gav  :D

I know you asked Yannis - he will answer I am sure - but this is my opinion.
I would definitely email and explain all, ask for a room with a sunset view.
You have nothing to lose by this and everything to gain.

Also think about going out for your Anniversary meal,
I would always recommend the Beachcomber Bistro for that special occasion and book in advance.
Get the corner table on the patio, and the sun will set while your meal is in progress - it's beautiful there!
Tell Sue it's an anniversary and she will look after you, Nicky the chef is brilliant, and can do off menu things as well!

Hi Gavlah1973
All rooms have a seaview so in theory they all have a sunset view. The hotel consists of 3 blocks plus the pool.
Looking right to left facing the sea.
Block 1 contains Reception and bar areas with 2 rooms on the floor above.
Next is the pool area with both indoor and outdoor dining areas situated under the reception/bar area. The outside dining area an ideal place to watch the sunset while enjoying your evening meal and carafe of wine.
Block 2 comes next. This is an accommodation block consisting of approx 16 rooms.
Block 3 is another accommodation block of approx 14 rooms.(The number of rooms in each block is a guess but between them they total 30).
Both blocks are 2 story buildings so the best views are from the top floors.
I prefer block 2 which is higher than block 1 and gives you the best views.
The top floor of block 2 consists of a mixture of balconies and verandas. The balconies are open to the elements on all sides while the verandas are set back and covered.(Check the photos on the Romanza website of the hotel.Counting left to right top to bottom it is photo no.14).
My own particular preference is the balcony types which are rooms23,26,29.
The higher two and therefore the best view are 26 and 29.They are closest to the pool area and look down the valley and path to the beach. This gives you wonderful views of the beach, sea and islands not to mention the swallow/swifts that swoop up and down the valley all day and  build their nests around the hotel. As you may have guessed i always have room 26.
As Tony suggested email the hotel at least 3 weeks before you arrive with your room request.I also rate the Beachcomer for that special meal.
I hope this helps

Yannis - Brilliant reply - I am sure that lots of people will benefit from the detail.
I learnt from that as well - as we have never stayed there - just popped in for a meal, if it wasn't for the hill I would stay there!

Trouble is I was diagnosed with some Arthritis in my Hip a few days ago, following X-rays -
I have had intermittent pain for last 3 years now and blamed a trapped nerve, That's why I stay on the "Flat", no extra strain on the legs.

I am now looking at any treatment that will help it - still attending physiotherapy, as I don't want to end up with a metal hip!!
I thought it was an old man's problem (maybe I am an old man!! LOL) - but the Doc say's anyone including kids get it as well.
Given up the Ballroom and Latin dancing we used to do as well, so annoying.

I used to run up all the S S hills! Looks like I'll be driving from now on!! LOL

Wow.....cheers Yannis.....

I'll deffo email them and see what I can do. I thought all rooms were sea view or part sea view so it sounds like I can't really be in a bad position.

Wish it was August now!!  :-\

Tell me about it!!  :(

By the way, Yannis, I've exchanged a couple of emails with a guy called Mike at the Romanza who has told me to mail him around a month before we go just to remind me and he'll sort me out with the best available room.

Cheers for the advice mate

Hi Gav
Glad i could help.
Mike owns the Romanza along with his sister Nitsa. The day to day running of the accommadation side is done by Nitsa and her husband Costas. The restaurant/bar side is under seperate management but in truth it is one big happy family. You will understand  why when i tell you that Katie&Leo run the restaurant/bar.Katies sister Alex runs reception .Alexes daughter Eleni and Katies son Andreas carry out the duties of running the pool bar and waiting tables at meal times. Not forgetting Marina who carries out evening reception & bar duties.

Hi Tony
I have been known to enjoy the odd one.On the days we are around the hotel my favourite drink is what i call my pre lunch aperitif. I leave my wife soaking up the last of the morning sun and retire to our room.Remove the odd can of Mythos from the fridge and make my self comfortable on the balcony in peace and quiet.I can now take in the magnificent views over the sea, beach and islands.Meanwhile the swallows/swifts are swooping up the valley to feed their young in the nests built on the hotel walls. This perfect tranqil time is the ideal occasion to partake of an ice cold Mythos or two.

Serious question............................. We know from many friends that the Romanza goes from strength to strength despite staff changes. I also read other forums so why are so many of their "fans" going to stop elsewhere in 2010?

Hi Sandra
It gave me some cause for concern to read that lot of Romanza regulars are staying elswhere in 2010.So much so that i searched every review forum on the internet to find the numbers involved and their possible reasons for doing so.The only adverse comments i could find were on Trip Advisor they were for oct 2009 hols and mainly complained about the breakfasts. This caused the owner Mike to post a reply blaming the pittance he receives from Thomson for Oct bookings.None of these poor reviews appeared to come from Romanza regulars. The other thing that is  slightly strange is that 2 of them were posted Jan/Feb ,a long delay for someone who had something to get of their chest.
I honestly know of only one person a friend of mine who in 2010 instead of visiting the Romanza twice is making one visit .The second visit is to the Teresa where i believe he got a good price.
I am not disputing what you say is true only that i cannot find any evidence.

To be fair Sandra, the other Half board places (can't comment on Teresa's / Perros, as never did the half board or B&B there),
Breakfast is only ever OK and usually continental.
Thomas Bay, Athina Hotel, Nafsika, Golden Beach in the old days, etc. etc.
All have a top-up fee, for the better breakfasts / full English.

We found the best Breakfast's in the resort to be had at Two Stars or the Condor, beat all the Hotels for quality & substance.

I still think that the only disadvantage for those up the hill  - - - is the Hill!
avantage = great views, better rooms in most cases,
disadvantage = (unless fairly fit) - that slog up the hill.
People get older and find it a struggle - that's all that puts me off - Romanza is a great Hotel.

the breakfast at the terresa hotel only my opinion and ive stayed twice at the athina h/b is very good last year if you wanted a full english breakfast it was two euros extra for that you got egg bacon sausage tomatoes beans  glass of fresh orange juice two toasts butter and tea or coffee that cant be bad for that price and it was cocked to order and served hot ,but its true that the owners  get pittence from thomsons, leo told me he only gets eight euro a day per person to stay at the hotel scandalous of thomsons ,such a lovely hotel and family and views.yammas mike. :-* :'( :-\

Hi Sandra
Your first posting saying lots of people are leaving the Romanza concerned me.Your second posting saying people were leaving EN MASSE both astounded and disappointed me.Ever since joining the forum i have spoke my mind on all subjects with no malice intended. This applies in this case.It disappoints me that on a forum that strongly supports San Stefanos and its people you make a statement that roughly translated means the rats are leaving the sinking ship. This in my opinion is a kick in the teeth for the management team who took over the Romanza at the start of 2009 who in my opinion and the vast majority of fellow guests are doing a brilliant job.The last thing they want at this time of economic problems.Lets have a look at the facts then let me know if you can justify your statements.
Leo & Jenny left the Romanza at the end of 2008 with it rated approx no6 hotel in Corfu on Trip Advisor. The talk on all the forums was the Romanza would  not be as good in future.
Katie,Alex and family took over in 2009 and following numerous excellent reviews it rose to the No1 hotel in Corfu by mid season.A position it kept until the Oct reviews mentioned in my previous posting.
As I post the Romanza is still rated the No3 hotel in all Corfu.
So in all honesty Sandra i  cannot see how your comments can be justified.
That is unless you or the people who are leaving the Romanza know differerent.
Having said all that i will still let Don buy me a pint when we meet
No hard feelings

Have you checked your spelling and punctuation? LOL

I checked into the use of a capital I mid sentence and found there is no grammatical reason for doing so.
If we capitilize the word I why do we not do it with other Pronouns.
Eg.
Personal pronouns in standard Modern English  Singular Plural

First. I me myself we us ourselves
Second .you you yourself you you yourselves
Third. Masculine he him himself they them themselves
Feminine. she her herself
Neuter. it it itself

PS
I hope this is not a devious plot to keep me off the subject that deserves  capitals THE ROMANZA HOTEL.

Just thought of another one?? Is the air con free at the Romanza or do you have to 'pay as you go'?

I know I'm going at the end Aug/early Sept but I'm such a warm person that I'll need it!!

I've had the bedroom window open all through the coldest winter in recent history in West Yorks and I've already made the missus put the 4.5 Tog duvet on the bed ahead of summer!!!!

Yannis

Just thought of another one?? Is the air con free at the Romanza or do you have to 'pay as you go'?

I know I'm going at the end Aug/early Sept but I'm such a warm person that I'll need it!!

I've had the bedroom window open all through the coldest winter in recent history in West Yorks and I've already made the missus put the 4.5 Tog duvet on the bed ahead of summer!!!!

I hate being warm in bed!  >:(
Hi Gavlah
As Mike said I am visiting my son in Dubai and will be here until Sunday. It is hard work but someone has to do it.
As regards the Romanza there is a charge for A/C.I am not sure of the charge as I have never had to use it in late June. The Romanza has mosquito screens on the balcony door so you can sleep with the door open which has always proved sufficient for me.

As far as I know all the places charge the same for Air Con - never heard of any deviation!

Yannis - glad to hear about the mozzie screens - simple but effective

I can't understand why more hotels/apartments don't use them ?

You have to pay a daily/weekly fee (this is apparently the same all around San Stef)

I expect a full and frank review from you ahead of my visit in August!!

Hi YIANNIS

Just a bit of further info:
Block one (near the pool) has 18 rooms and block 2 (nearest to the town) has 12 rooms.

Alex's daughter is no longer at The Romanza, she has been working in Crete but is back now, maybe just for a vacation.

A new waiter named Dimitris now working alongside Andreas.

We'll see you in June 2010.

Do you remember 3/4 years ago a lovely girl called Helena working at the Romanza, She had a wicked sense of humour.
Then i think it was 2008 she had a very bad scooter accident and i have not seen her since.

Do you know if she made a full recovery, i think she was due to marry also.

I know you are tuned in regular from your balcony at the Romanza.Do me a favour and make enquiries regarding Helena. If you are reading this you will know I mean the young lady who did breakfast & lunch during Leo & Jennys time. Not Helena(Nitsa).Up to date info is always better than old data that may or may not be current.
Please post or PM me. Use the method you consider appropriate.

Spesh I was just reading a report on Holiday Watchdog re the Romanza where the poster stated there were NO kettles? They did at least say the showers were proper walk in cubicles with sliding doors unlike those completely open ones, or ones with a silly curtain that you normally find in Greece?
