Title: Villa / boutique style hotel in San Stefanos
Post by: Geoggy on April 14, 2009, 02:26:28 PM
Hi there,

Never been to Corfu before (Creteophile here - but always fancied Corfu since reading My Fmaily and Other animals at school  :))

I think we've settled on San Stefanos as the resort of choice.

I am used to a village called Koutouloufari on Crete - which is small and friendly and has great tavernas - please tell me San Stafanos is similar?! It sounds it!

Anyway, we tried to book into Delfino Blu and surprise surprise its full - they have recommended some new apartments, which are similar quality, but I wondered what reccommendations you guys might have?

We have left it a bit late to book - looking for a week from 27th July - something like Delfino Blu or a private Villa - budget £2K max for one week.

Help!

Efkharisto!

Welcome to the forums

How many people are you looking to book for as there are lots of apartments and also some hotels and villas?
As for being small and friendly with lots of tavernas that does sound like San Stefanos that we all visit year in year out.
What other apartments have been recommended to you?

 :)

hi there - sorry should have said its just for 2 of us - first holiday together without kids - so looking for something a bit special!

haven't got a name of the other apartments - they aren't open yet - all i know is they are 5 minutes walk away from delfino blu and the are 200 euros a night - which seems a bit steep to me!

do you know of any small villa's with a private pool? or a really nice hotel like delfino blu?

EDIT : i think this is them;

Don't think there is anything quite so up-market as Delphino's!  The best hotel (probably) is Athina but this is half-board and I gather the food isn't spectacular.  Very nice B & B is Romanza, a little way up a steepish hill norther of San Stef. Anywhere else is adequate and I can't speak highly enough of the village - it just feels good!!  I've been to Crete too but come back to SS everytime - there again next month.

thanks for the help all - especially jules - unfortunately the villa - which looks perfect - is booked.

i am going to look at alternatives - and if we do decide on san stef it will be a cheap and cheerful job - in which case i'll use this forum to pick the best apartments - was quoted 630 with flights each for the hotel athina by thomson - which doesnt seem to bad - but i would be eating out every night so idealy going to look for a b&b

thanks again

The Sugar and Almond appartments are on Cardiac  Hill just in front of the Dimitra, they are superb they have huge windows, the panoramic views are spectacular   and the interiors are as described- up to date kitchens the tiling is ultra modern not your usual. These are very upmarket designed for all year use and the family want them ready for this season.

thanks joan, do you have the details of the family so i can book direct? how far up the hill are they? dont like the sound of a hill described as "cardiac" !!

being quoted vastly differing rates from various travel companies - noula at san stefan travel ( asrecommended on here) has not replied to my email and is not answering her phone.

thanks

You could always try through Noula at San Stef Travel for Margaritas apartments. They look brilliant and are stuck between  the beach and a supermarket.

Hi don't give up on Noula, she is away for most of the week, but will answer emails - usually within a couple of days right now.
She took 3 days to answer my last one.
She has some very nice apartments without a pool, (upmarket), right on the beach.
Don't worry about a pool - every pool welcomes all to use it - not like most resorts - just buy a drink there during the day!!
We use most of the pools if we want a change from the fantastic beach.
The Athena is a nice hotel, food so-so, but eating out in the evenings is part of the fun here, some of their meals will appeal.
Best pool in the resort!! Right on the beach.
Lots of apartments to choose from - just check location before you book.

Although using pools at any place is free you are not supposed to eat food you bring with you or drinks. Any food or drinks must be bought there.

They did have a spate of holiday makers from the slovikia region who brought all their food with them.
Not very popular - especially when they brought out the dried garlic sausage sarnies by the pool and the camping gaz stoves to make coffee!! You couldn't make it up!!

Has anyone been to the Sunset on a Sat or Sun when the Greek couple play live music??
We found them brilliant - mix of Greek with Bouzouki or American style country with guitars!!
Don't forget to try the Fresh Grilled Sardines - yummy!!

You can have either - we like them as a starter - not too heavy either!!
Just ask Spiros when passing if they are on the menu that day, or which day.
I asked for sardines as a starter last year in the Thomas Bay and they came out of a tin - so always check!!

Never appealed to us, to walk to other apartments or hotels' pool, bit like going to your local baths with a towel under your arm imo

We much prefer the use of the pool where we are staying. That was the only thing about Belle Vue it didn't have one but did have the room to put one in. Still we used the beach every day when we stayed there.

It's totally different in San Stef - they welcome you to use any pool - just buy any drinks at their bar!!
It stems from when there were only a couple of pools in the resort, and it just spread.
We often use the Athina Hotel Pool, and have Lunch there!!

You are so right about it being so easy in san stef to use other pools! We used to stay in the Efi when we had the kids with us but now actually like it when we don't have a pool. It is usually quieter and we spend most of our sun time on the beach anyway!

Gotta' go with that  - we are at the Theodosia, no pool, don't need one as so many to choose from,
but we will be on the beach, much more fun for people watching!! Great entertainment!!

Just what is a 'boutique' hotel anyway??

Concerning the Belle Vue, we stayed there several times and they were always fully booked, and what is more you really needed to book a year ahead to be sure of getting your chosen weeks. Wonder what made them pull the plug on such a success story-bizarre!!

I hope i am right on this the gentleman that owned the Bellvue was very ill so the family sold them and the owner from Casa Delfino bought them. Apparantly he was supposed to turn them into Luxury rooms that would have been apart of the Delfino complex.Actually years ago they were first in the Thomas cook brochure.

We have never stayed there - but did get shown around about 4 years ago, all done to a very high standard,
but also very expensive, compared to the rest of San Stefanos, the question is - Besides the Decor' and a private pool,
what do you get for all that extra money? I would rather spend the extra dosh on good meals etc, also - -
There's lots of really nice Apartments that give you all you need - if you look around - at a reasonable rate!
So while the Delfino is in a class of it's own, Decor' wise, - the food is matched through-out the resort!
The welcome is often bettered elsewhere as well!!

Hi,
Just wanted to say...we stay at Delfino Blu...just booked our next return visit for 2010.
Each to their own on what you want out of a holiday.  However, take it from me, you get a fantastic welcome from EVERYONE at Delfino Blu, and you really do get what you pay for.  Kostas (Owner of DB) will be working on the apartments next door over the winter and judging by the plans the place is going to be amazing.  DB is FULLY booked for the entire 2009 season - think that speaks for itself.  It is a private hotel though so it is fair to say that non residents would not be invited to use the pool and that's fair enough.  Do agree though that San Stefanos is a brilliant resort.  We stay on a B&B basis and make the most of the fantastic restaurants on offer.

Believe me you get the same welcome, hospitality and friendliness almost everywhere in S S!!
It's the landmark of the local people there - and they make you one of the family,
for example just ask anyone who stays at Terezas, or in fact anywhere!!

I agree Tony - wherever you stay you always get a fantastic welcome and genuine friendliness as well. None of the locals can be faulted on hospitality either. It is second to none and brings returnees back year after year :) :)

You really couldn't find anywhere more hospitable and friendly than Delfino Blu!  Have you stayed there?
Never stayed there but have eaten there and know the owner and most of the staff well.

And I noticed that they had a party when you left last time Jules, isn't that nice of them!! LOL

At the end of the day wherever you stay its only a place to sleep and shower for a week or 2 and most people can do that anywhere - even by the pool!!!
Or on a bed on the beach if money runs out!!! LOL

Totally agree Zoe. One of the reasons , but not the main one, is we know what to expect when we arrive. :)

Obviously the best and most well fitted hotel. I toyed with the idea of staying, but quite a lot extra for a party of 5.
I still find standard accomodation ok as we only sleep and wash there really, and we know the place so well!!
But it is a stunning Hotel to look at - ideal for a honeymoon etc.

I like to spend 7 or 8 weeks a year on holiday somewhere in the world so go for comfort, cleanliness and functionality rather than the snobbish route of expensive holidays. I have 4 weeks to look forward to in San Stef and would like a fifth! Much better than 2 weeks of luxury!

They block some of the daily fat in your diet and you can lose an extra 50% over the standard diet!

You can get the equivalent of those on prescription from the doctor Tony - which for you would now be free.

Thank you guys,
Glad to be of service and of course you know Kip is.... blowing.. for info from down under ( to reiterate, diving if developed could make San Stef a prosperous place, please look up Sharm in Egypt or even UK for example ) and he is always ready to do some Glug... Glug with you all, pretty balanced ???

We have the same thoughts so I speak always for both of us and I can represent him 100%- but which of you girls thing it is the same way round? --- I always give him tests, the 3 things about me test like a past TV prog; I love fish like you Don but given choices he will probably say that I like chicken because thats what he thinks I should like so I would say, take note cos you would loose us the prize should we get to go on TV :) 8) , yes we have a laugh in our house with that sometimes.

Like you, we are Passionate about San Stef ( Corfu in general ) and believes it is a great place with so much to offer and want to share this with everyone. It is quite fustrating at times ( from our business perspective ); we have a lot to offer and wish we could get someone to listen on a broader scale!!!!! However, glad if we can provide good info to enable everyone to enjoy what we do have in our beautiful, spell bound second home :) :) :) 8)

Title: Re: Villa / boutique style hotel in San Stefanos

Hi Guys, I tell you , you two crack me up, bet you crack yourselves up too, well you make me laugh and I hope others too and that can't be bad!!!! My new name for you Two: Pinky And Perky, sorry Lol LOL.

To your questions Tonycool and Fish, ah, so many names for you!!, We have a home in the Uk and were last there for Christmas.

Corfu is absolutely wonderful in winter, better than our Uk winters and would be very suitable for Alternative Tourism activities; walking rambling... you know we ramble in the wet and mud amongst the cows in winter in the UK; history lovers/ many musiums, painters etc,  and the many carnivals and festivals, christening, weddings, name days if you have any Greek friends to invite you, lol, including Easter celebrations are yet to be experienced by us holiday makers. There are so much to say on this topic, dont get me on my Podium.... chat when we meet up.
No unfortunately, no direct flights which is a shame but we have managed via Athens at not too high a cost and have been able to connect to Corfu within two hours; the thing is to look for these avalabilities early. However, if there was a demand surely flights would be available?????
Think Easyjet started in March this year which is not bad!!!

Forget perfect for Scuba diving too and heaven for Brit divers.

Yes there can be quite a bit of rain, according to the Locals last Winter was a bad one for rain. However, after the rains the skys are blue and the sun shines bright with still bril sun rise/set and to us, thats the difference. Still need your sun shades.
I have not seen the mild Jack Frost as I don't get up early,  snow is not the norm although it snows in Albania.....3km across from parts of Corfu, amazing eh...and on the main land too.

Corfu Town opens all year and so does ? Kassiopi, its quiet in San Stef but we love that too but you would need a car and central heated house...some new builds now offers that...youn should visit in winter if you love peace and quiet and drinking coffee with the Greek locals in Alviotes which stays open all year, or at the Liston in Corfu Town with me!!!!! and enjoy the real Greek culture.

Bus rides are enjoyable in the winter and just immagine a day out walking with Hilary from "The Corfiot" followed by a night around the fire at one of the bars (maybe Sunset Taverna olive wood log fire ) with Greek dancing, Dons' Peach/snap/sprite/gren or a few moh.... who would care about the rains! had better do some work ,will get the sack, dont mind my spellings, hope you get my meanings though, been ruined by "spell check" lol

"Antio"..adio in Greek and have a good day ??? 8) 8)

Pinky and Perky - you cheeky B*****!!
Well I would be Perky if I get stuck with that nickname -
Don would be Pinky after his funny little finger, and his pink chest with the ginger doormat!! LOL
(After all - he said - - - Pink is the new Yellow)!!

No - not too happy about that nickname - what if we got swine flu - as P & P !!! scary!!

I think we should be called "Tango" (me) and "Cash" (Don) - as per the film!!
I would be Tango so I can say to Don - You've been Tango'd!! (well his chest is orange!!).
And he would be Cash - after his wrinkly condom-like plastic bag that doubles up as his coin wallet!! LOL
