San Stefanos news and views / Re: Corfu.... On A sunday evening !
« on: April 29, 2014, 01:03:46 AM »
Hey folks.... So Myself and the better half are returning in a few weeks (After a break last year). We are staying at Stamatis and arrive on Friday 16th. Its My Partners Birthday on Sunday the 18th, He is now a full year on the wrong side of 40 hah.... and I can't seem to find anything good to do (Like trip to Corfu town at sunset or something different). I have tried san Stef and Agni travel etc but seems Corfu on a Sunday afternoon stops lol.

Any suggestions ?  ???

Don't do Corfu Town on a day/evening trip you need to stay overnight, that way you can really enjoy the night life of Corfu, it really is very special.

Mine and Gill's favourite is the Corfu Palace Hotel, its not cheap but worth every penny particularly for a special occasion.

Stop at the Palace and eat at the Pergoda Taverna in the Jewish part of Corfu Town, its perfect.

Another quick update courtesy of three w internet.
Unfortunately not good weather today, wet until mid afternoon, but the sun did manage to peek through by the end of the afternoon.
There are a few early guests here, and with tour operator flights starting this weekend, more will soon be arriving.
Tables and chairs suddenly appearing ready for guests arrival.
Barras is now all set up, and lots of cleaning happening at little prince.
Nothing much happening at the old sundowner now.....it seems to have come to a halt, although there is work going on in the old Chinese.....
Manthos and kamini bar were also cleaning, inside and out, despite the weather.
Hopefully the weather will pick up soon.

We were in Kassiopi en-route to San Steph this time last year and it was sunny and 30c!

What a difference a year makes :'(

You live with dynamite every day. Don't tell her I said that!

Already told her Jimbo and she has an explosive personality!

You will need to buy Gill a Carafe of wine at the Little Prince to calm her down ;D ;D

Can you imagine the Health and Safety brigade here if people started letting off dynamite!

They would have a fit and you would be arrested by armed police.

My son us getting married in San Steph in July and we were offered dynamite, I suggested fireworks might be simpler!

Hmmm, Waspman is right but I still prefer cash as do the local Taverna owners and retailers. I imagine cash is easier to deal with when deciding how much you owe the tax man.

One problem with cards also is that the cash till at Thomas Bay is often empty!

I had my 50th birthday in Corfu Town at Easter 2011 and it was fantastic the plate smashing was great fun but not for those obsessed with Health and Safety, if you are still on the street at 11am you better take a tin hat! The atmosphere in Corfu Town at Easter is wonderful and I would love to go at Easter again. We enjoyed 3 days of fantastic weather in 2011 about 23c and sunny but this year it's very different so rather glad I stayed at home where the sky is cloudless!

Last year we spent Easter in San Stephanos and enjoyed Lamb on the spit at the Rose Garden, we were drinking and eating for 10 hours and again the weather was great.

Hi Altea, I'd be wary of using your credit card for smallish purchases, because of the "non-sterling transaction fee" which gets added onto your credit card statement. This appeared a couple of years ago and makes what seemed like a bargain at the time, not so much!

That's a good point, leave your credit cards at home bring sterling and change it at San Stefano travel, this year you should get nearly 1.2 euro to the pound.

In the Little Prince last year two people could enjoy a 3 course meal and wine for 23euro or about £19 with great entertainment and atmosphere, not many places in Europe you can do that!

Where to eat out in San Stefanos? / Re: Delfino Blu.................

Have never stopped at DB and never will, its clearly over priced and has developed purely on its 'snob' value.

We stay at the Fedra Mare when possible where the rooms are twice the size and the hospitality ten times better!

There are now so many places in SS that offer superior accommodation, just look at some of those offered by San Stef Travel, Vassillis, Sugar & Almond and Parilia, all of those offer apartments that are better than DB at half the price.

And have you seen the outside of DB recently? Its a rubbish tip, if I had paid the inflated price to stop there and had a apartment with an inland view I would be seriously pi**ed off.

Don't pay those stupid prices the place just isn't worth it.

However, I love the Mango Bar and its friendly staff!

WinJ,

It would be sad if you were to leave. There is no "gang mentality" here. What there is a lively expression of opinion. I get loads of stick, because I'll usually say what I think is true.

It's called democracy - an idea invented by the ancient Greeks.

There are two separate things in this forum:

(1) Somebody asking a question about (say) an apartment. They will get one or many experienced and objective responses. We all try to be helpful, and have been.

(2) Somebody starting an "opinion" thread, like this one. If you do that you can expect, not just here, but in many forums, to find that not everybody rides on your hobby-horse. There will be "fors" and "againsts."  It's important to keep a sense of humour and recognise that we do not always agree about everything. That's what keeps the forum going over the winter when we'd all rather be sitting on a beach. You cannot reasonably expect not to be challenged.

Many of us have heated exchanges on the forum, but will happily meet up and chew the fat (sometimes literally) in Agios Stephanos, have a hug and a drink, and enjoy life. That's the essence of being away from it all in a nice place: we forget political and other divisions and just enjoy the company and some life-experience sharing.

Please continue to take part in the fun.

Jim

Jimbo,

You should work for the diplomatic service ;D

Thing is I can understand non-smokers not wanting to sit next to someone smoking inside but outside a Taverna? you would need a police sniffer dog to detect someone smoking more than 3 feet away!

I always find it strange that some folk will moan about people smoking outside but wont be bothered about nearby cars and bikes belching out fumes, its madness. Its even worse when anti-smokers drive round in big 4*4 Cars but please don't get me started on that one ::)

Going to go all independent next year as I prefer Easyjet to Thomson (much cheaper extra leg room seats) and I prefer staying at either the Kapetanios or Fedra Mare.

In July we went with Thomson to the Teresa but buy the time we paid extra leg room it wasn't cheap at all, plus we always get a hire car from the Airport so the free transfer went to waste.

I also prefer handing my crisp Euro's to the locals instead of it ending up swelling the coffers of the Germans!

The Breakfast at the Teresa's is great and as described above, not massive just enough and of course the location on the patio overlooking the bay is perfect.
