San Stefanos news and views / Re: flights
« on: February 06, 2013, 11:50:12 PM »
I have noticed how expensive they are, easyjet in particular although I managed to get some reasonable dels by booking the day they came out.

September with easyjet is a joke, I booked mine the day they came out but they wanted crazy money from manchester so i saved over £200 going from Luton.

Yes it's a trek but the flight times are better and I would rather save the cash.

I don't think we will be having any sneaky weekends in San Stephen this summer, managed to get last minute Friday and Monday flights for about £100 each last summer, I reckon such deals will be thin on the ground this season.

Heard a sad story for Christmas yesterday.

Gill and I were shopping in ASDA when the check out girl told us a couple had just been stopped from walking out the shop with a trolley full of goods, we enquired what kind of goods and she informed us the trolley was full of food for a Christmas Dinner.......nothing else.

We dont know the story behind this of course because when challenged by security the couple ran off, but welcome to the UK Christmas 2012 where desperate people risk arrest just to put food on the Christmas table.

Its straight out of a Dickens story book, the fat cats in Brussels dining on the finest food and wine while half of Europe starves :'(

Great thread and most of us can identify with Tony's thoughts, I grew up in east Birmingham in the 70's and then it was an area of nice semi detached houses, well kept gardens and generally healthy families.

Now it is an awful place where the houses are run down having been turned into flats, the streets flow with litter and crime rates are high, its so depressing seeing such a nice area go down the toilet.

I moved to Cumbria 20 years ago and glad I did, its not perfect by any means and social problems still exist but Penrith is a nice town surrounded by hills and mountains and even on a grey day (of which there are many) there is always something nice to look at and lift the spirits.

I visit London frequently stopping in a hotel near Heathrow Airport before travelling into the Capital, I will never get used to how busy it is and I always think the best thing about London is the M4 out of it!

Dont worry Tony when you sell your house in London you will be able to buy a mansion anywhere else.

So far I have really enjoyed the series and it can only help tourism to Corfu particularly San Stef weddings!

However, some of the negative comments on the forum about the residents of NE Corfu are unfounded, Gill and I have stayed in some lovely Villas on the NE Coast and we find the locals and holidaymakers in Kassiopi, Avlaki and Agios Stefanos friendly and not at all 'stuck up''

The Villa owners bring much needed money to the Island and often visit out of season when most San stef visitors have gone home, this brings an extended season to places like Kassiopi where Tavernas are open from March to November. We visited Kassiopi at Easter 2011 and it was buzzing, full of Villa owners getting their pads ready for summer and spending lots of money in the process.

Villa owners contribute massively to the Corfu economy and this is welcomed by Corfu people who benefit from the money they bring in.

Lets face it, if we all had the money to buy a Villa in NE Corfu we probably would!

So while San Stef will always be our favourite, I think we should celebrate Corfu's diverse visitors and the ITV programme does this very well.

When are the Easyjet flights for late September due out?

I want to be the first to book couple of late September flights because as in the summer the price will go up quickly.

Where to stay / Re: Corfu in October

Actually for people in San Stef next week the forecast isn't that bad once the current storms clear. Monday onwards should bring a mixture of sunshine and thunderstorms and it will be warmer than average for October.

Chris, give our regards to Hari and Demitri, you will love the Fedra Mare and if it does rain you will not mind being stuck in your apartment.

It's significantly cooler now, with sometimes full cloud and sometimes patchy sun. The forecast are for increasing possibility of rain at the weekend.

Beach beds are vanishing daily. Many places will close on Friday, when there will be a mass exit from the village, with very few arrivals. Little Prince is closing on Friday, and Maria says she's closing on Saturday night or Sunday morning. Zorba is down to a few indoor or sheltered tables, and here at Nafsika meals have been inside since the high winds last week, but a small but cheerful band of hardy souls keeps the bar open until late. It looks like the population will be tiny next week.

"Patriccia" (sic) aka Kleopatra, who is the hairdresser in Avliotes and runs the evening bar at Nafsika, is doing "in your room" hair-dos, and has cut mine, reducing my usually ample beard to designer-stubble length, which wasn't quite what I had in mind. She justified it by saying that she didn't like beards!

So - life continues at a gentle pace. Nice.

It cooled down a lot for us too, it was 27c when with left Corfu and -1c when we got home :'(

I have had to scrap ice off the car every morning this week and now its raining again, I would return to the warm patchy sun in San Steph this weekend given half a chance!

Enjoy your last week.

I'm sure that Spiros will feed you! We arrived at 9:45 in July and he said "Dump your bags and come down for supper." And great it was.

The restaurant is open until eleven anyway.

One hint for Nafsika is that if you intend to eat somewhere else one evening, tell Spiros earlier in the day. It saves them making salads and portions which they will have to throw away, and they perfectly understand that however good the food is at Nafsika, everyone like a bit of variety.

Not long now!

Hi jimbo,

Hope you have a great time, no doubt our paths we cross somewhere near the little prince!

Weather looking very good for next week, do you have a phone line to the Almighty because you always seem to get good weather!

Have a safe trip.

Where to stay / The Barras
« on: September 21, 2012, 08:46:01 PM »
Having stayed in San Stef many times gill and I often walked past the Barras and thought they looked, well, a bit grim, but a few weeks ago we got a cheap flight out and stayed there over the weekend.

It was excellent! Once you are in the Barras it feels much nicer than it appears from the outside, the bar area is really pleasant and while the pool area is small it was quiet and the pool was spotlessly clean, however, it was the apartment where the Barras really scored well.

We had a ground floor studio and it was great, very large, newly decorated and like the pool area spotlessly clean, the kitchen area was better equipped (not that we eat in much) than many in san Stef and the whole studio was airey and bright. The owners were friendly and helpful and the food excellent.

We would defiantly stay there again and I would recommend it to anyone.

By the way, do consider a long weekend in San Stef, we flew out from Manchester and the return flights were less than £200 each, we stayed at the Barras for £18 each, it would have cost more to go to London for the weekend! We eat at the little prince for the 3 nights and with the exchange rate you could get a three course meal for £7.50!! Roughly the price of McDonald's. In a London restaurant that wouldn't even get you a starter.

Winter is arriving early in the uk and a weekend in San Stef is a great tonic before the dark days arrive.

We have stayed at the Fedra mare twice and both times were excellent, the apartments are of a very high standard and we love the curtain on the balcony which is a nice 'delfino blue' touch!

Fedra mare only has about 8 apartments and with a large pool there is always plenty of room for a swim.

Staying at the Fedra mare again in October....can't wait!

Hi Lesley

Yes my description of everywhere else being dead was a bit harsh for as you say some tavernas in the villages are open.

Actually when we stayed in Corfu town we went to a taverna in a village about 4 miles away and had a great night, Greek food, Greek dancing the lot.

It was weird being at a Greek taverna with a roaring fire but it felt really cosy and the food was truly fantastic.

Oh and guess who was running the taverna and taking part in some impromtued Greek dancing...... Pavlos from zorbas!!!

Thanks for all your replies but we need not have worried, we are staying at the Corfu palace hotel and they have a temporary large screen set up in the bar.

All the Brits staying here will be there ready for the 9.45 (Greek time) kick off.

Come on England !!!

sounds interesting Lesley, but what accomodation is available during the closed season as it where?

Out of season it's best to stay in Corfu town, we went in late march this year and it was buzzing and the hotels are much cheaper than the summer. We stayed in the fabulous corfu palace for less than £50 per night each.

However, San Stef and most other places were dead.

San Stefanos news and views / A Good Bar with Sky TV in Corfu Town?
« on: June 21, 2012, 09:28:22 PM »
Gill and I are spending this weekend in Corfu Town before moving on to the Romanza on Tuesday.

However, we want to watch the Italy V England Match on Sunday night so can anyone recommend a good Brit Bar in the town.

In San Steph you will have loads of venues but not sure about Corfu Town.

This is the first (and last) time I have looked for a British Bar in Corfu! :o ;)
