Bristle Boy - some years ago Gillie and I were in Stoupa and we went for supper in a taverna overlooking the sea. We picked a table on the edge. There was a boat moored below and the diesel had spilled. The smell was very strong. There were very few people in the place and we moved to a table in the middle, quite a long way from the only other couple.

Towards the end of the evening, one of the two diners (shaved head, piggy eyes) came over and said that our smoking had ruined their evening. I pointed out that (a) we were quite a long way from them (b) there was a jerry-can leaking diesel and that was what had tainted everyone's supper. He threatened to throw me on the rocks twenty feet below. I told him to go and do something proverbial to himself.

As he was grabbing me the staff rushed over and restrained him - profoundly puzzled by this - as most Greeks are - shouting "It's outside!!!"

Quite right - ask people politely not to do what they are perfectly entitled to do. Very politely. Remember that this is a request, not a legal requirement.

I think Tony and Linda will testify that when asked if they minded us smoking, and they said please don't, we did not. We didn't complain. The company was more important than the cigarette.

If I can move, so can you. Somewhat depends upon who sat down first.

Usually the hosts will notify customers in advance so that the domain servers (global systems that turn human readable things like sanstefanos.co.uk into an actual IP address that looks like 195.234.5.167) can be updated. I don't think that was very good service.

Mind you, my business partner and buddy Dean could not access our website from Essex last week for 24 hours. I said I'd put a taste filter on.

To go off topic - I've had an anxious day. Dean spent nine hours in surgery today for a heart valve replacement. I'm massively relieved to say that he's now in Intensive Care and the surgeon says that it's been successful. These things do remind us that a few hours off-line is a mere irritation compared to the more significant issues of losing friends and loved ones before their time.

Nafiska has a no-smoking area. If they choose to sit next to you, that's frankly stupid.

A 404 error usually means that the client (your browser) connected to the server, but the server could not link to the specified base page.

This can be caused by:

* an error by the website manager when updating the site pages
* the host ISP having set it to reject the link (bill not paid?)
* an internal error on the server, usually caused by a faulty system update

There's nothing you can about it, so don't waste time with wrong advice on the web. If you own the site, you get onto the ISP and find out what's happening.

The old flannel nappies were useful when travelling. I once smuggled a new camera through the Tanzania/Zambia border sealed in a bag at the bottom of a plastic nappy bucket filled with dirty nappies with the lid on. This had been in the car boot for four days in temperatures in the 90s. You can imagine what it was like when the customs officer opened the lid! He did not investigate any further!!!

We will be staying in the less vulgar part of the village.

So there!

How shocking! There could have been children around.

Among other things, farting produces methane. I think farting al fresco should be banned. I've had several evenings ruined by people at surrounding tables breaking wind.

Andy - I can't believe your'e actually quoting the Daily Mail - the paper with the worst record of appalling lies in the history of journalism!

That the report is spurious. I'm amazed that you would quote it.

Information and help please / Re: Micro brewery

The beer from the local brewery is excellent. They brew lighter and heavier ales, all delicious. They're more expensive than Mythos etc, but those proponents of DIY holidays to support the local economy should drink nothing else!
