Money availability
« on: July 03, 2012, 10:55:28 AM »
Am coming out to San Stefanos for the first time next week. I've been travelling to and loving the Greek Islands for 10 years now, but San Stefanos will probably be the smallest resort that we've stayed in. I get the impression there's only a few ATM's in S St and the wider area and not always reliable. Would the nearest bank be Corfu Town or are there any nearer?

There's an ATM in Avliotes (5-10 minutes on bus), and several in Sidari (25 minutes on bus).

You can change money at San Stefanos Travel and other places.

I haven't changed money since I stopped using traveller's cheques. I take it you can just use your bank debit card for this? Thanks for the information.

Most people take cash and maybe a pre-paid Euro debit card, which most (but not all) tavernas accept without charge.

Best to bring too much cash just in case, lock it in a free safe while here.

Just got back from Kefalonia and posted this on a different thread also....

There were 3 cash machines in our resort as opposed to the one in San Stef. Everyday at least 1 was out of order and on 8 days all 3 were down!!
Exchange a bundle of cash before you go (£500 worth?) then at least you have a buffer fund. I wouldnt rely solely on the ATMS at all

Credit cards are working well in Ag Stefanos at the moment, giving in access of 1.23 if using the "no commission ones (Post Office, Nationwide, Santander, Halifax Clarity etc)
